At our private practice, a routine check up with your dentist will include a thorough examination of your mouth to check for any signs of disease.

What is mouth cancer?

Sometimes referred to as oral cancer, mouth cancer is where malignant cells develop within the mouth. Mouth cancer can be on the gums, the tongue, along the palate (roof of the mouth) or inner cheeks. It may also be on the lips.

Common signs of mouth cancer include but are not limited to:

• Mouth ulcers or sores that bleed or do not heal
• White and red patches within or around the mouth
• Lumps around the neck
• Persistent sore throat
• General pain or discomfort within or around the mouth

How do you get mouth cancer?

There are several risk factors for cancer. These include but are not limited to smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Mouth cancer screening should be performed by your dentist as part of your routine check up. Screening involves a thorough examination of all parts of your mouth, including your face and neck.
