If you have a tooth that is severely damaged or decayed, root canal treatment may be necessary.

This procedure is used to clear a tooth of infection, with the aim of restoring health and function to that tooth.

When is root canal treatment necessary?

Infection is usually the primary reason for root canal treatment. If the pulp at the centre of the tooth has died, then root canal treatment may be necessary to treat the infection and prevent the need to extract the tooth. With an infected tooth, you may experience pain within the tooth or gums, swelling and even tooth loosening.

What is the process of having root canal treatment?

Your dentist will first need to clear the tooth of infection. The pulp and nerves will also be removed, with the hollow tooth then shaped and sealed to prevent further infection.

Will it hurt to have a root canal?

Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic to make sure the patient is completely comfortable. Rubber dam isolation is also carried out, to ensure no contamination of the tooth from saliva and to also protect the airway. Slight discomfort may be experienced during recovery, though this can be alleviated with non-prescription medication.
